Just like physical health, mental health is a key component of overall wellness. Good mental health means feeling good, mentally and emotionally, being able to cope with life's challenges, and generally, having a positive outlook. Unfortunately, mental health is often overlooked or viewed as less important than physical health. This is a mistake! Mental health is just as important as physical health, and in fact, taking care of your mental health should be a priority.
How you nourish your mind, how you pay attention to and care for your feelings, has a direct impact on your physical body. Renowned Neuroscientists, like Dr. Candace Pert,(“Molecules of Emotion”)in the last several decades have proven the mind-body connection through ground-breaking research studies that show us our emotional states indeed have direct impact on our bodies’ immune systems and overall functioning.
The Benefits of Good Mental Health:
The benefits to maintaining good mental health cannot be underestimated. People with good mental health are better able to cope with stress and setbacks in life. They're also more resilient and adaptable, which means they're better equipped to handle whatever life throws their way. People with good mental health stand a chance to live longer and have healthier lives and in so doing, may also be inclined to make time to use their creativity - another important aspect of maintaining good mental health and experience a better quality of life.
How to Maintain Good Mental Health
There are several things you can do to maintain good mental health. Here are some:
Exercise: It’s important to get regular exercise. Exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. In addition, exercise can help reduce stress levels and improve sleep quality.
Nourish your body: It's also important to eat a healthy diet, as what you eat can affect your mood and energy levels.
Nourish your mind: Be mindful of what news and social media you watch – how much negativity you are ingesting into your mind, as it will have an impact on your emotions and then eventually on your body. Choose instead, to have more exposure to fun, joyful videos and information. (As a start, I chose not to watch mainstream news, and felt more positive after only 3 days).
Relaxation: Another important thing to do for your mental health is to make time for relaxation and creative hobbies that you enjoy. This helps create a good work/life balance. A creative activity, can be almost anything that feeds your spirit, stimulates and expands your intellect, and effectively absorbs you to the degree that it keeps you relaxed and completely present in the moment - which then uplifts and calms you, because it then becomes a form of meditation.
Positive influences: It’s crucial to surround yourself with positive people who know and appreciate you, and who can be there to support you during tough times. Supportive people are our real life-lines, because it is so much more difficult, if not almost impossible to get through some of life’s challenges when we are too isolated. So, stay connected and cultivate these precious relationships as you can.

Conclusion:
Good mental health is essential for your overall wellness. There are many benefits to maintaining good mental health, including improved success in school or work, stronger relationships, greater happiness, and even a longer lifespan. There are several things you can do to maintain good mental health, such as exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, reading or watching positive entertainment, making time for relaxation and creative interests, and surrounding yourself with supportive people. Your body will respond well to your efforts in investing in your mental health!
